I’ve come in today and just a really quick Wednesday tip for you because every Wednesday I have my call with my Step out and shine business mentoring group. And this question came up, which I do find a lot of people who are either starting business or have been in business for a while, but still haven’t gotten around to doing this.
And it’s the importance of creating your list and what to do with that. So I’ll just share with you today, if you had, do not have an email list. And many years ago, when I started in business, I always, told that every person on your list, and when I talk about list, I mean, in your, in your CMS systems or, you know, people have, this free ones like there’s MailChimp or MailerLite is that each person is worth $1 per month for you.
This is when you are communicating with them and sharing offers and doing work with them. There is much importance of having a list, but what I find with some business owners that their list is either in their phone, on their computer, on pieces of paper, and it’s not in the one place.
And that kind of indicates to me that they’re not probably communicating with their audience, their leads, their clients, telling them of updates, blogs, and, and sending them offers to work with them. So the first thing that I actually say to do is to make a spreadsheet and I’m going share with you how to collate a list.
I hope this is going to be helpful for you. The first thing I do is grab all those names and put them into a spreadsheet. Now these are not real names in this presentation, obviously Joe Jones, who knows that person and who has a phone number of one, two, three, four, five. So, but the best thing that you can do when you’re just starting at is to grab those pieces of paper, that the emails are on them on get them out of your computer, out of your outlook or your Mac, and put them into a spreadsheet.
Now we have to put them, collate them in a spreadsheet in a very certain way so that you can load them into your mail provider, right? So it’s kind of, they have to talk to each other. Why don’t you just come up with these headings might, might be a little bit big gift for you.
You put in one column for first name by column for surname, by column for the email. Now those are the most three important pieces that you need if you’re just starting out basically. But again, if you’ve got the phone number and your system allows that put in the phone number, please, and then put in their address, if you have it as well. But sometimes, you know, you’ve met somebody, you ask them, I’ve got an ebook about, I’ve got a piece of content I can share. Would you like to have that? Just give me your name and email that I always give you your phone number, all that kind of thing. So at least these three here, right?
You can always categorize them. One thing that you do need permission to vote is that these people have given them permission for you to add them to your list. You do not want to be labelled a spammer and I’m not going to shut down your email account, so you must have permission. And now you can put permission on the side here.
Let’s not get too technical. I think the best thing, first thing to note is to get them into these columns, with these headings really important to make sure you’ve got these headings in there and then that’s it. So sometimes I don’t put that. I mean, if you’ve got it, you’ve got it. The next thing you need to do is to save this as a CSV format. Now I’m going to show you how to upload into different systems because there’s a, each system is a little bit different. They’re very similar. But I think the first thing you need to do is get them into the spreadsheet. So you get them into the spreadsheet, right? And again, different columns.
You then save it as a CSV file. CSV report.
So that’s the easiest way. I just want you to realize that it’s really important to have your list and you can start emailing to them. The one thing that this on the side here is that getting too technical, you can actually write, so you can actually split this into three lists, if you like, or, and, and upload them separately.
